The Ribes sativa variety White from Juterbog (in German Weiße aus Jüterbog) is an older, generations-tested German variety of self-pollinating white currant. It is suitable for growing in colder climates and takes its name from the German town of Jüterbog in the district of Teltow-Fläming. It flowers during April-May, with flowers that are relatively resistant to late spring frosts. It matures in late June to early July. An adult plant can produce more than 5 kg of fruit, which ripens evenly. The most productive and highest quality crops are on 1-year-old lateral and 2-year-old main shoots.
The fruits of this 'white' variety are arranged in long clusters. They are cream-coloured with a shiny, thin, transparent skin and a sour, aromatic flavour. It is suitable for direct consumption, but also for processing, such as making jams, juices or jellies. White currants are also popular for their decorative value in gardens. The white from Juteborg is resistant to the fungal anthracnose (Drepanopeziza ribis) and is considered fully hardy.
It does not pose any significant responsibilities for the grower and produces a regular and abundant crop even in colder growing areas. It prefers sunny sites and well-drained, quiet, moderately heavy soils with a pH of around 5,5 - 6,5. Give the plant a layer of compost every other year and it will reward you with vigorous growth and production. Growth is vigorous and upright, reaching a height of 1-1,5 metres at maturity. In late summer or early spring, remove dry and damaged branches and prune or cut back long shoots to encourage the crop. Remove all young shoots from the ground if there are enough biennial shoots. We keep suitable young one-year-olds if we have only visibly aged shoots remaining. The currant bush does not come into bearing until about the 3rd year after planting.
